A savvy businessman, Henry Lippit profited from both the Union and Confederates during the Civil War by supplying both sides with uniforms and materials. He served two terms as governor of Rhode Island and had this incredible Providence mansion built as his legacy. Erected in the Renaissance Revival style, the house has some of the most intricate woodwork to be found anywhere in Providence. Of interest to architectural history buffs is the early central heating system and electrical wiring, one of the earliest examples of such innovations in New England.
